After many years of print publishing, Native Realities heads back to its roots in the digital world.
Twenty years ago, Wordcraft Circle launched a small internet journal called Native Realities. The journal was edited by newly anointed mentor Lee Francis 4. The idea was to have an online platform for Native writers and creatives to showcase their work. The inaugural “issue” featured works by Carolee Sanchez (Laguna) as well as many other Wordcraft mentors and members. For the next three and a half years, Native Realities brought a variety of content from plays to visual art to dynamic interviews. Native realities published literary exclusives and brought some exceptional new voices into the world.

Then in 2014, Native Realities was reborn as a fully formed publishing company, dedicated to producing Native-centric comic books and graphic novels. In the past six years, Native Realities has published more than a dozen comics and graphic novels, making it the largest publisher of this medium in the United States. Award winning titles such as Tales of the Mighty Code Talkers, Deer Woman, and Native Entrepreneurs have continued to delight and inform audiences throughout the world.
However, because of the changes in the publishing landscape due to the current pandemic, Native Realities is going back to its origins. Starting at the end of this month, Native Realities Publishing will become Native Realities Digital!
We will be providing great content from videos to cutting edge commentary to…listicles (the backbone of the internet! Ha!). We will still be publishing but the publishing arm will shift to Red Planet BnC and Red Planet Books (and imprint of UNM Press). Native Realities will focus on bringing more content by Native writers to the digital universe and highlighting the work of our master writers and storytellers.
As we build out our new web/digital home we are definitely looking for writers. If you are interested, please check out the link HERE and we can look to find ways to engage you and your work.
Welcome back Native Realities, it’s like you never left!
