It all began in 1992.
That was the year they held the largest gathering of Native writers and storytellers in Norman, Oklahoma. It was called Returning the Gift.
Dr. Lee Francis III, fresh from publishing Native Time, was invited to be a part of the gathering. While he was there, he received news that a former student has passed away, leaving the world bereft of his voice.
To honor his memory, Dr. Francis established an organization which would help mentor Native writers and storytellers as they continued on their professional pathways. He called it Wordcraft Circle.
And here we are, almost twenty years later, continuing to grow and mentor as we ensure those voices continue to be heard around the world!
Welcome to the Circle!
